"WE SERVE" THE LIONS STORY
Lions International was founded by Melvin Jones in 1917 as a result of his dream to form a local business club for the betterment of the community and the world at large. A favorite saying of his was "You can't get very far until you start doing something for someone else." He contacted similar organizations around the country and invited them to a meeting in June 1917. Most agreed to merge, taking the name of the largest of the groups, the Indiana based Association of Lions clubs. Later that year the first convention was held in Dallas, Texas, where the constitution was adopted and the first president, Dr. W.P. Woods, was elected. In 1925, Helen Keller addressed the Lions clubs International convention in Cedar Point, Ohio and challenged them to become "Knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness."
From that time, the primary mission of Lions Clubs International has been to rid the world of preventable and reversible blindness and provide services for people who are already blind or visually impaired. Lions are also involved in disaster aid and giving to those in need in communities far and near.

HOW CAN I BECOME A MEMBER OF THE HARBOR MESA LIONS CLUB?
It is easy to become a member of this great group of dedicated Lions. You must be sponsored by a member, have attended two meetings or events and with your application include a $35 entrance fee. Your application will be reviewed and approved by the Board of Directors.
DUES AND FEES STRUCTURE: Dues are paid on a quarterly basis and include the meal for the first meeting of the month, plus International and Multiple District dues. You must keep your dues current to remain a member in good standing. If you are interested, please contact the e-mail address or send a letter to the P.O. Box as listed.

DISTRICT EVENTS :
Lions world-wide are planting trees and going "Green." The International President has initiated a tree planting project for all clubs in all countries. His original goal was to plant 1,000,000 trees. That number has almost tripled to over 2,900,000 trees already growing in many areas. Our District is committed to 1,000 trees and the Harbor Mesa Lions will be adding trees to parks in Costa Mesa and Fountain Valley.
Why trees? ( Quoted from LIONS INTERNATIONAL Website.) "Why trees? It's no secret that trees help the environment, but you may be surprised by all the benefits that planting a tree can provide. Trees are like the lungs of the planet. They breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. They also reduce erosion to save soil, help preserve local water sources, and provide a habitat for wildlife living under more and more stress. Simply put, planting trees in your neighborhood really is one of the best things you can do for the local environment. Any of us can plant a tree. It's a very visible and hands-on way for each and every Lion to make a difference. It's also a great project to invite your community at large to join your local Lions club in a collaborative effort. If we can plant a million trees, it will reinforce the limitless potential we all know we have to make a difference as Lions."
LIONS CLUBS COLLECT FUNDS FOR DISASTER RELIEF
District 4 L4 Lions Clubs and Lions the world over step up to the plate with each disaster that happens world-wide. They are the first on the scene to help and support victims. From the Tsunami, earthquakes, fires, floods or any kind of human suffering, the Lions are there to help. You can be a part of this great effort. Contact the Harbor Mesa Lions, see our contact page.
PAJAMA PARTY IN DISTRICT 4L4
Lions in District 4L4 are collecting new, flame-proof pajamas for children placed in protective custody. In most instances these children leave without anything but the clothes they are wearing. A new pair of pajamas will be comforting to them as they spend their first night in a strange, but safe place. Sizes from infants to teens are needed. Please contact us to donate your gift of pajamas or a donation to enable us to buy them. See our contact page. This will be an on-going project with the District. Your kindness and donation are greatly appreciated, especially by the children who receive the pajamas.
